Empowering Student Success and Boosting Informatics in the Region

Empowering Student Success and Boosting Informatics in the Region

Throughout more than a decade of loyal support, Steven and Nancy Frank have made several gifts to advance the College of Informatics (COI) at Northern Kentucky University. From funding Cybersecurity Peer Coaches in the Cyber Threat Intelligence Laboratory to contributing to the COI Building Fund for Griffin Hall, the Franks have prioritized investing in education. "Technology isn't slowing down. And as it becomes more critical to every field and endeavor, it's great to know that NKU has established a place for the cross-pollination of technology and other disciplines," says Steve.

Most recently, while reviewing their will and trust, the Franks chose to include NKU as a beneficiary in their estate plans. Their planned gift will benefit the COI Retention Fund, which supports students who face financial obstacles on their path to degree completion. Steve shares, "We were eager to support a fund that is dedicated to helping promising students who are capable of completing their degrees but are just short on the money to make it happen." Nancy furthers this thought: "If we can help people pursue their passions and cross that finish line, then that is worthwhile to us," she says.

The Franks credit their philanthropy to the relationships they have fostered over the years. Observing the generosity and impact others in their circle could make on the region inspired them to do the same at NKU and elsewhere. While they admit they are at the beginning of their philanthropic journey, the Franks are confident in their decision to invest in education at NKU. "Confidence and trust are two things that donors can count on when making a gift to NKU. The staff is committed to stewarding our gift and respecting our wishes, ensuring all aspects of our commitment are honored," says Nancy.

Steve and Nancy encourage students who benefit from their giving to study and work hard. They also hope that students remember to take risks from time to time, stating that there is no growth without a bit of risk. "Life will take you in directions you can't anticipate, so you have to be flexible," says Steve. "If you continue a life full of education, it will benefit you and take your career to places you may have never expected."

The cycle of giving relies on the action of devoted community members and donors like the Franks-a couple who have always had an innate desire to give back. When they found they were ready to put their charitable goals into action, they were inspired by others to impact the areas of their community that mean the most to them. "We hope our gift inspires other donations. If we can shine a light on the good work NKU is doing, perhaps others will also consider donating at the level for which they are capable," says Steve.
